Capacity Analysis of a Mid-scale Network

Background

A new-town core suffers recurring peak congestion; isolated fixes are insufficient, requiring a network-level view of flow re-distribution.

Objective

Assess network capacity under multiple demand scenarios, locate bottlenecks and propose engineering improvements.

Method

Extracted network from OSM, converted via netconvert; assigned demand with duarouter from an OD matrix, ramped demand to saturation; ranked links by V/C ratio and queue length to find bottlenecks.

Reflection

Network-level analysis shifted my mindset from "fix one intersection" to "tune a network". Bottlenecks often appear not at the most congested link but on secondary roads after flow re-routing.
