My Traffic Simulation Toolchain Guide
My toolchain
After a year of iteration, my traffic-simulation toolchain has stabilized:
| Stage | Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Network | OSM + netconvert | Acquire & convert network |
| Demand | OD matrix + duarouter | Generate vehicle routes |
| Sim | SUMO + TraCI | Run & online control |
| Analysis | Python + Pandas | Result statistics |
| Viz | ECharts + QGIS | Charts & maps |
Why not VISSIM end-to-end
VISSIM's GUI is great for teaching and detailed scenarios, but its automation is weak. When I need to sweep parameters across thousands of runs, SUMO + TraCI's scriptability is essential.
A small tip
Setting TraCI's step length to 0.5s instead of the default 1s noticeably improves signal-switch fidelity, at ~30% more runtime. I debug at 1s, then re-run at 0.5s for the final result.
Tools extend the hand, but don't let them think for you.
